Flat-Coated Retrievers and Friends
Pasanita 2024 pictures are up. Click the Pasanita OC link above to go to the picture area.
Note on the website URL: if you were lucky enough to get this far, you will note that the link changed from “flatcoats.duckdns.org” to “flatcoats.gemuttlichkeit.org” automatically. The duckdns.org domain has been extremely unreliable recently (you will usually get a "server not found" error), so I have have moved everything to my own domain under a different provider to try to improve that. Simply replace “duckdns” with “gemuttlichkeit” in any link you have and you should get the expected information.
Gemütlichkeit — a feeling of contented friendliness and belonging
Gemuttlichkeit — a feeling of Gemütlichkeit because you are with your dogs
With due apologies to my Swiss and German ancestors and friends for the egregious American word play
Our flat-coated retrievers
Welcome to our little web site to do our own “brags and wags” for our flat-coated retrievers. What's a flat-coated retriever? Well, it's not a fluffy Labrador retriever, it's not a black golden retriever, and it's not a black Irish setter. A flat-coated retriever is a hunting/gun dog that is especially good at retrieving waterfowl. That, and it's a fun-loving, tail-wagging, family dog. Flat-coats are also known as “tongues with dogs attached”, and all of ours definitely fit the bill. The formal definition of a flat-coat (in the US) is given in the AKC Breed Standard.

Our first “flat-coat” was “Will”, an excellent introduction to the breed who passed away in January 2020. Our second, “Trip” was a fantastic dog that loved to please people and earned a bucket-load of titles. Unfortunately, he died unexpectedly from cancer in September 2021.
Our third, “Echo”, is Trip's son. So far he is living up to his dad's extremely high standards, and maybe surpassing them. He has done well enough in conformation, and has passed Trip in obedience and rally. With continued time and training, he is likely earn the Master Hunt title which just eluded Trip.
Click on their names in the menu box above to find out more about them individually.
The “Previous Dogs” in the menu is about our first two dogs, both rescues (we hadn't yet found out about flat-coats). While both are long gone, they were both wonderful family members. There is also an interloper that Mike decided to add to the pack.
We are members of the Pasanita Obedience Club, the Flat-Coated Retriever Society of America, the Great Western Flat-Coated Retriever Club, the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Club of America, and the Golden State Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Club.
(And just because it's convenient, here is the full list of AKC titles and abbreviations that are mentioned throughout this website.)
Note: “double-Q” is passing the Rally Excellent and Advanced levels on the same day. “triple-Q” is passing the Rally Master, Excellent, and Advanced levels all on the same day.
